The curriculum for our course “Secretarial Science and Office
Administrations“ is based on the TVET Ethiopian Occupational
Standard (EOS) Level IV, yet exceeds the EOS according to our
idea of a highly skilled executive office assistant.
The overall course is taught over a period of three years. Each
year is divided into two terms comprising three modules each.
Besides to these modules students participate in exercises in
order to further deepen and strengthen their abilities.
We
are convinced that only when we demand an exceptionally high
workload can we give our students a viable perspective for their
future.
The curriculum pays special attention to IT-supported and
IT-featured courses and their subsequent application in national
and international companies. In addition when doing their
internships students gain an insight to their future employment,
develop “soft skills” and may establish first contacts. During
their final internship, third year students are given the
opportunity to specialize in one field.
Furthermore NLCC’s curriculum strives to build an above average
English language proficiency throughout the whole program.
This is ensured by a specially drafted English program including
760 hours of English classes in three years, thereby exceeding
the normal EOS workload multiple times. The course starts with a
three week intensive course in October, the main purpose being
preparation of the students for their studies in the college and
finishes with a one-term intensive course in exam preparation (TOEFL).
Our program, however, is not limited to an ambitious educational
training. It reaches far into what can be best phrased as
personality development. In this integral approach staff members
of the college do their utmost to provide the young women, who
all come from a difficult background, with a real opportunity of
self-fulfillment.
In order that the trainees can make full use
of their personal potential skills such as individual
decision-making, critical thinking and team work need to be
particularly emphasized. Therefore by means of role-playing and
presentations the students gain self-confidence while lectures
on geography, psychology, philosophy as well as on Ethiopian,
world and economic history broaden their horizon.
Finally, once a week trainees can seize the opportunity to
engage in physical exercises, play an instrument or enjoy other
hobbies. These activities are organized by the social worker of
the college.
In
sum the college understands the importance of this additional
personal mentoring as a complementary part to the main training
program.
Before students graduate at the end of their third year they
must pass the following three exams.
1.
COC Diploma Examination
2.
NLCC Final Examination
3.
TOEFL Test
This means that they will be awarded three qualifications. |
